An ode to Clueless

Are you so totally buggin? Cause I know I am when I think that it’s been nearly 20 years since the movie “Clueless” was released. The movie is a total Betty, and I’ve been in love with it ever since I saw it on my aunt’s laptop late one night when I couldn’t sleep. I fell big time in love with Cher, Dionne and Tai. And Josh….ooooh Josh. Baby Paul Rudd is a sight to behold.

The film is written and directed by Amy Heckerling, and based on the novel ‘Emma’ by Jane Austen (Lets acknowledge for a moment the awesome lady powerness of that sentence, female writer/directed based on a female classic novel)

It’s recently come back into what I like to call the “sphere” of pop culture. I think a multitude of things have done this. First up, Lime Crime announced their just released ‘The Clueless Witch’ Collection, inspired by both Clueless and the tv show American Horror Story: Coven. I am super obsessed with their promotional pictures for this campaign, they are divine.

Secondly, this absolutely fantastic homage to Clueless by Iggy Azalea. The song is also fantastically addictive and I haven’t stopped singing it.

But really, Clueless and the themes in it are always relevant. Just like the book the film is inspired by, Clueless has enduring themes and characters that readers and viewers alike are constantly drawn to. The fashion is also to die for, and seeing the old mobile phones are always a blast from the past. The film is genuinely hilarious, the lines are fantastic and never fail to make me laugh. I truly love this film, and all it stands for.

I’m sure after this you’re thinking “Gosh Cassie, you’ve reminded me how much I love this film, but how do I incorporate it into my daily life?” Well I will tell you dear reader! Here are my top tips to be a total Betty.

  • Plaid. Who can forget Cher and Dionne’s matching plaid outfits in the opening scene. If you’re not bold enough for a full matching ensemble just add a simple skirt or even headband. Something signature.
  • Knee high socks. These are my go to item when I’m feeling a little down and need a little 90’s in my life to make it better. I always feel super cute with them on, and they look so fabulous with boots and a cute dress.
  • Slang. You want to be a total Betty. You don’t want to be a full-on Monet, In the words of Cher “It’s like a painting, see? From far away, it’s OK, but up close, it’s a big old mess.” Just throwing some Clueless-isms into your everyday life will brighten any day.

To sum up, Clueless is life. Nuff said.
