I spent yesterday sick in bed for most of the day, which meant I returned to one of my all time favourite shows set in my favourite building in New York, 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
30 Rock is the brain child of juggernaut Tina Fey, of Mean Girls and SNL fame. Within an episode of this show you will realise just how similar Tina’s character in the show, Liz Lemon and I are. Summed up in one sentance, this is Liz summed up
JACK: “Avery and I are lovers”
LIZ: “Ooooh, that word bums me out when it’s not between the words meat and pizza”
If you haven’t already fallen in love with this show, then what are you doing?!? Every time I watch an episode I pick up more and more jokes, whether they’re hidden in the background or a reference to an episode 2 seasons prior. The show is brilliantly thought out and intricate. It’s a part of what I’d like to refer to as the NBC trio: Community, 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation. All critical darlings that struggle to pull numbers like other big comedies like The Big Bang Theory, 2 Broke Girls and Two and a Half Men. I think it’s because the NBC trio reward frequent and returning viewers. The show isn’t designed to be watched out of order and infrequently. It’s designed to call back to previous episodes and have jokes that are strung along full seasons.
I could attempt to name all the things brilliant about 30 Rock, but I could never do it justice.
All I will say is that this show will forever be genius, and one of my favourite shows in the world.
